Atomium Brussels is an iconic structure located in the parks of Heysel, Belgium. It was originally built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, and stands 102 metres (335 ft) tall. The structure consists of nine 18-metre (59 ft) stainless steel clad spheres connected by tubes, representing the basic shape and unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Its architect André Waterkeyn was inspired by both a molecule of iron and a version of Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome.
The building is made up of two sets of three interconnected spherical spaces, with escalators connecting the levels, and is accessible to visitors from 9am-6pm daily. Inside them are exhibition halls, a temporary exhibition room and a number of restaurants offering Belgian delicacies. The top sphere contains a panoramic view, providing magnificent views over Brussels from the height of its observation deck. There is also an audiovisual show that tells the story behind this impressive landmark.
Atomium Brussels remains one of the city’s most popular attractions today and has been recognised as an important cultural monument in Belgium since August 16th 2006. Over time it has also become an icon for both Belgium and Europe itself — it has been featured on coins, stamps and even Eurostar tickets! Every year thousands flock to Atomium Brussels to marvel at its unique design and experience all it has to offer — making it truly a sight worth seeing!
