Black Tower Brussels is a historic building located in the heart of the Belgian capital. It is a symbol of power, resilience and strength for the city. The tower stands at over 40 meters tall and is one of the few remaining medieval stone towers from the 12th century still standing today. Built in 1180, it was originally used as an observation point and later served as a prison. Because of its prominent position within the city centre, it was heavily fortified to withstand enemy siege. Its walls are over two meters thick, made from solid sandstone blocks and surrounded by an additional protective ditch filled with water.
The tower has seven floors connected by winding spiral staircases, with two small turrets at each level that add to its unique appearance. One of the turrets was used as a prison cell while the other accommodated a watchman who kept guard throughout the night. The roof of the Black Tower still features several arrow slits which were used to shoot arrows at enemies during sieges.
The tower remained essential in providing safety and security during turbulent times, even through World War II when it survived without any major damage. Today Black Tower Brussels has been transformed into a museum where visitors can learn about its history, view ancient artifacts found onsite and marvel at its intricate architecture from different angles on top of its viewing platform.
