La Tour de Tournai Brussels is a historic tower located in the city of Tournai, in Belgium. It stands at an impressive height of 90 metres making it one of the tallest structures in the area. The tower was built during the 13th century as part of a fortified city wall and was equipped with several cannon ports for defense against enemy forces. Over time, it has become an iconic symbol for Tournai and serves as a reminder of its rich history.
The structure is composed of four floors arranged in decreasing size: from bottom to top, an octagonal watchtower, a rectangular guardroom and two circular turrets, decorated with pepper-pot battlements and crenellations. Each floor features its own terrace which provides spectacular views of the city below. Inside, you can visit the museum within where artefacts related to the fortification are on display such as muskets, firearms and bits of armour.
The most captivating feature of La Tour de Tournai Brussels is perhaps its gilded clock face which was added during the late 18th century. It is adorned with reliefs depicting characters from Tournai's illustrious past such as Godfrey de Bouillon who led a crusade to liberate Jerusalem from Muslim control in 1099 or Jan van Renesse who fought against French invasions during 1667–1668.
Today, La Tour de Tournai Brussels remains an important landmark for visitors wishing to explore this beautiful Belgian city and admire its timeless architecture that continues to captivate passers-by after over seven hundred years since its construction began!
